Where to Apply

Individuals who wish to be married must both appear in person to apply for a marriage license in the Clerk's office-First floor, Adams County Courthouse.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Women under the age of 50 should bring a completed STATE OF INDIANA PERMARITAL EXAMINATION CERTIFICATE. This can be obtained from your physician. A blood test of men is not required. One of the following items of identification is required for each applicant:
  • Certified copy of individual's birth certificate;
  • Baptismal certificate;
  • Hospital certificate;
  • Valid operator's license or other identification issued by a state that contains the individual’s date of birth and current address.
AGE

Applicants at lest 18 years of age may marry without special consent. Individuals who are at lest 17 years of age must have consent to marry verified in the presence of the clerk of the circuit court by both parents of legally appointed guardian of the individual who is less tan 18 years of age. If consent is not obtained, the individual may petition the judge of the circuit of superior court. Individuals under 17 years of age must have the court authorize the clerk to issue the license.

Residence:

Individuals who intend to marry must obtain a marriage license from the clerk of the circuit court of the county of residence of either of the individuals. If neither of the individuals who intends to marry is a resident of Indiana, the individuals must obtain the marriage license from the clerk of the circuit court of the county in which the marriage is to be solemnized. IC 31-11-4-3 A couple obtaining an Indiana marriage license but inteding to be married outside of Indiana should cheeck the legal requirements of the jurisdiction in which they will be married to determine what is necessary for a legally binding marriage in that jurisdiction.

PERSONS AUTHORIZED TO SOLEMNIZE MARRIAGES

Marriages may be performed by members of the clergy, such as a minister of the gospel, a priest, a bishop, an archbishop, or a rabbi. Also by a judge, mayor (within the mayor's city), or a clerk or clerk-treasurer of a city or town (within the county in which the city or town is located.)

EXPIRATION OF LICENSE

A marriage license expires sixty - (60) - day after the license is issued unless a marriage is solemnized under the license within the time.

COST OF A MARRIAGE LICENSE

Indiana residents: $18.00
Residents of any other state: $60.00

HOURS FOR APPLICATION

Applications may be made daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (the courthouse is closed on Saturday, Sunday, and all legal holidays.) Pleases allow at least 30 minutes to complete the application.
